I picked up this little ottoman at the Goodwill store a few years ago knowing that one day I would either reupholster it or make a slipcover. I finally had the time to do both!

You would think that the process of transitioning my home to fall would be as simple as placing a few collected pumpkins around the house and switching the throws and pillows to those with more fall colors or textures. But for me it evolved into moving around furniture too. When that happens (for me anyway), it could also mean I may need to change up a piece of furniture. It’s a problem. I’m sure my husband is grateful that I can repurpose and sew! Let’s just say that this process evolved into a newly slipcovered chair and an upholstered ottoman.
When I moved my slipcovered side chairs back to the kitchen nook they needed a little foot rest to anchor in front of one of them. Enter the Goodwill ottoman. It would definitely need to be reupholstered.

I proceeded to deconstruct, document and replace the layers a step at a time. What initially seemed like a simple project was actually more complex and time consuming than I expected (it usually is).

Now for the fun part…the rebuilding. I would replace the disgusting foam and batting with new and clean materials. Whenever possible, use the existing pieces as a template to cut the new pieces to ensure a good fit.

Although it wasn’t perfect, it was great practice and definitely an improvement. I always learn so much through this process. The lumbar accent pillows on the chairs match perfectly with the blue fabric of the ottoman.
And since I was in the zone, I pulled out a pre-washed linen fabric that I had purchased several years ago for another project that never materialized. It would be perfect for a simple waterfall skirted shorter slipcover for the same little ottoman. My thought that it would be for the summer months to lighten it up. This took far less time and was done within two hours.

Same ottoman, two different looks. It’s versatile enough to move to anywhere my heart desires should I move around furniture again. Not a bad bang for the buck, especially since I probably paid $6 for the ottoman initially and already had the fabric in stock.
